Influential Teacher Synopsis

Updated: Oct 21, 2018

Going to four different schools, I’ve met four different teachers who has made a positive impact on my life and I’m forever grateful for them. Getting an assignment like this was really exciting as I got an opportunity to visit my past teachers and tell them what’s been happening in my life after school. The teacher I chose is someone who introduced me to the world of the universal language. She’s the kindest, caring, most positive woman I have ever met. When I found out I was in her class in 2011, I was in tears because I was filled with happiness. The person I chose to interview is my elementary teacher, Tanya Thompson.

For this assignment, most people would interview their high school teacher. At first I was going to, but I knew that I wanted to reconnect with my roots and get to know her. As an 11 year old, you don’t really get to know your teacher because it wasn’t an interest, but this assignment gave me an opportunity to actually get to know her and see what it’s like to be in a kid’s school

As mentioned before, I remember her being my mother at school for all 6 years of elementary school. She was always involved with all the clubs that involved music and that’s what brought us closer and what blossomed my love for music. However, I learned that she went to study psychology and french, not music. I was a bit shocked but you don’t need to go to school for music to love and teach it.

She is the type of teacher who truly wants to get to know you as a person and not just view you as a student. She tries her hardest to talk to everyone as much as she could, and is allowed. She has mentioned that the hardest part about being a teacher are having the "bad" behaviour / students she gets as they are most isolated and challenged. However, those students are the ones that she remembers best and who helped shape her into the person she is today.

Just for my own sake, I asked her what advice she would give to future students, "You don’t actually start becoming a teaching unless you actually start teaching. You need the experience to really see what you are capable of. Each year there is a different group. So being able to adapt and have different “versions” of you is something that is challenging when becoming a teacher. "
