Educational Movie Clips

Two very different genre of clips can teach one so many lessons. Being able to obtain the message being sent across the video, and using it in your everyday life is something that a lot of creators and producers try to do behind the main storyline. The clips I chose for this assignment that has taught me lessons about being the future teacher that I want to be and the musician that I am right now, are from the movie Kung Fu Panda and on Youtube by TwoSetViolin is 10 Worst Violin Habits.

To recap, the main character in Kung Fu Panda is Po who is chosen to be the dragon warrior by the greatest kung fu master, or sage. However, because of Po’s size and animal, everybody, especially the current kung fu teacher, Master Shifu, thinks very little of him. Master Shifu and his best students do everything they can to make him quit from all the hard training they do everyday. Despite all the hardships, Po doesn’t give up and this creates frustration from the teacher. Ultimately, Po is truly talented because of his love for food. He is able to do many jumps and physical combats just to get food to comfort him from all the negativity he’s been facing. After Shifu sees all the amazing things Po can do, he decides to train him, but differently from his current students. He uses food as a way of training.

Although Po does become a great student at the end, I don’t exactly agree with the way Shifu has been teaching Po at the beginning. The teacher made an assumption and quick judgement on his new student based on their appearance. All teachers should be welcoming with a positive attitude and should be grateful that some students find it a privilege to be studying under the teacher/professor. Shifu is also quick to anger and has little patience for him. As mentioned above, Po does become a great dragon warrior as Shifu finally understands how Po works. That is something that a great teacher should do -- being able to adapt to one’s learning habits and working together for both of their own benefits.

The other clip I chose is from one of my favourite Youtubers, TwoSetViolins. Their channel is consists of doing musical challenges (such as listening only to the second violin part, and guessing the piece), humorous skits, and creative covers. The clip is called 10 Worst Violin Habits. Although it isn’t a sit down and talk kind of educational video, it does teach you some habits that are straight to the point while using humour and sarcasm to get the point/lesson across.

I think this is an effective way of teaching young musicians about some habits that maybe they are doing. They exaggerate the habits to see what is wrong with what they are doing. Most students can also relate to these skits because they can physically see exact, if not, similar, habits that maybe their fellow peers are doing. If I could change one thing about the videos, is that they should include why this is bad, and how to fix it. I understand the purpose of the video isn’t to educate, but to entertain, but it would be nice to make it more educational on a separate video to elaborate on their points.

Both examples are clips that I grew up watching and has made me think about the way I grew up with my teachers, very strict or very vague about their point. I think it’s important to know that when you are teaching, you should have your funny ways and your strict way to balance it out.
